This
past week the whole world has been watching the tragedy unfolding in Haiti. The
most vulnerable Country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the
world, has suffered one of the greatest disasters in its history. The
earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude which hit Haiti last week, has killed tens if not
hundreds of thousands while millions were injured and are now homeless.
His Eminence Metropolitan
Athenagoras learned of the disaster while in Greece for meetings with
Government Officials concerning the Holy Metropolis. Efforts were made
immediately to contact our two Haitian clergy, Fr Barnabas Jerome Euginst and
Fr Pavlos Baby Petit Homme and their families. By the Grace of God, just
yesterday, His Eminence was informed that both clergy and their families are
fine and were not hurt in the earthquake.
Immediately upon hearing the news of
the earthquake, His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras contacted His All
Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who conveyed his concern and prayers
for the well being of our clergy and our faithful, and for all the people of
Haiti. His All Holiness offered his support and that of the Ecumenical Throne
to assist in whatever is needed, and directed His Eminence to do everything within
his power for the benefit of the people of Haiti. While in Greece this past
week, Metropolitan Athenagoras has been in meetings with officials of the Greek
Government, the Archbishop of Athens, the NGO for the Church of Greece
“Solidarity”, the president of the medical Society, “Doctors without borders”
and the United States NGO IOCC, in order to prepare a proper plan of response
this major catastrophy. Appeals were also made throughout Greece and Cyprus for
financial aid upon the directive of His Holiness, Patriarch Bartholomew, the
Archdiocese of America and the Holy Metropolis of Canada have been asked to
make a special appeal to their faithful for immediate assistance.
Presently in cooperation with the
Greek Government, the Church of Greece and the medical Society in Greece, it is
expected that within the next ten days, His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras,
the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece, the General Director of
the NGO “Solidarity” of the Church of Greece, and the president of the Medical
Society of Greece will travel to Haiti to distribute sorely needed medical
supplies.
His Eminence noted that is a tragedy
of immense proportions which will need months and years of help. Hence while
concentrating on the immediate problem of getting nessary medical supplies to
Haiti, Metropolitan Athenagoras is already planning for a more long tern aid
program which will be concentrated on the rebuilding of the lives of our
Orthodox Haitian faithful and our ministry in Haiti, including the rebuilding
of our schools and the homes of our clergy. Following his anticipated trip to
Haiti sometime next week, His Eminence will appoint a committee of clergy and
laity who will travel with him to Haiti the first week of pursue and accomplish
these long term goals.
With whatever funds collected from
the Orthodox Churches and individual faithful throughout the world,
Metropolitan Athenagoras expects to purchase non perishable food, small gas
burners for cooking, electric generators, blankets sleeping bags and tents to
take to Haiti and distribute to our faithful and all those in need of our help.
At present His Eminence appears to all the faithful to make whatever donation
possible towards a special fund set up for Haiti.

Metropolitan Athenagoras asks for
your prayers in behalf of our Orthodox brethren and the people of Haiti, that
our Heavently Lord will grant them the strength and comfort to overcome this
most unfortunate tragedy. Finally all of the Parishes of our Holy Metropolis
are directed to offer a memorial prayer (Trisagion) this coming Sunday February
24th for those killed by the earthquake and that a special tray be
passed, the funds of which will be used to purchase aid for Haiti.

Esta semana pasada el mundo entero vio la tragedia sin precedente
sucedida en Haití. El país más vulnerable del Hemisferio Occidental y uno de
los más pobres en el mundo, ha sufrido uno de los más grandes desastres en su
historia. El terremoto de una magnitud de 7.0 grados que azotó Haití la semana
pasada, acabo con las vidas de decenas, si no es que centenas de millares de
personas mientras millones quedaron desamparados, heridos y sin hogar.
Su Eminencia el Metropolita Atenágoras fue notificado del desastre
mientras se encontraba en Grecia reunido con diversos organismos
gubernamentales atendiendo asuntos referentes a la Santa Metrópolis.
Inmediatamente se dio a la tarea de contactar a los sacerdotes haitianos, el P.
Barnabas Jerôme Euginst y el P. Pavlos Baby Petit-Homme y sus familiares ya han
sido contactados, se encuentran bien y no sufrieron daño alguno en este
terremoto.
Inmediatamente después de escuchar las noticias sobre el terremoto, Su
Eminencia Atenágoras se puso en contacto con Su Toda Santidad el Patriarca
Ecuménico Bartolomé, quien consternado por esta tragedia, ofreció sus oraciones
y su preocupación por el bienestar de nuestros sacerdotes y nuestros
feligreses, y por todo el pueblo de Haití. Mientras tanto, esta pasada semana
en Grecia, Su Eminencia el Metropolita Atenágoras se ha reunido con los
oficiales del Gobierno de Grecia, el Arzobispo de Atenas, la ONG “Solidaridad”
de la Iglesia de Grecia, el presidente de la sociedad médica “Doctores sin
fronteras” y la ONG IOCC de Estados Unidos, en orden a preparar un plan
apropiado que responda a las necesidades suscitadas por esta terrible
catástrofe. Se han hecho peticiones también a los Gobiernos de Grecia y Chipre
por asistencia económica. Bajo la dirección de su Toda Santidad, el Patriarca Ecuménico
Bartolomé, las Arquidiócesis de América y la Santa Metrópolis de Canadá han
hecho una petición de apoyo muy especial a todos sus feligreses para una
asistencia y apoyo inmediato.
En este preciso momento en cooperación con el Gobierno de Grecia, la
Iglesia de Grecia y la Sociedad Medica de Grecia, se espera que en los próximos
diez días, Su Eminencia el Metropolita Atenágoras, el Ministro Asistente para
los Asuntos en el Extranjero del Gobierno de Grecia, el Director General de la
ONG de la Iglesia de Grecia “Solidaridad”, y el Presidente de la Sociedad Médica
de Grecia viajen a Haití para distribuir los implementos médicos y demás material
que se necesitan en este país.
Su Eminencia ha hecho notar que esta es una tragedia de inmensas
proporciones, en la cual se han de necesitar meses o años de ayuda. Del mismo
modo se concentran en buscar las ayudas necesarias para una ayuda inmediata y
resolver los problemas más próximos como lo son los implementos médicos,
material de curación y medicamentos para Haití, el Metropolita Atenagoras, en
este momento está planeando también un programa de apoyo a más largo plazo el
cual se concentrará en la reconstrucción de nuestra escuela y las viviendas de
nuestros sacerdotes. Concerniente a su anticipado viaje a Haití en cualquier día
de la siguiente semana, Su Eminencia designara un comité de sacerdotes y laicos
que viajaran con él a Haití la primera semana de febrero para evaluar
cuidadosamente la presente situación, con qué recursos se cuenta y determinar cuáles
han de ser los objectivos en este proyecto a largo plazo.
Con todos los fundos recaudados, los que sean, de las diversas Iglesias
Ortodoxas y las donaciones individuales de los fieles y parroquianos alrededor
del mundo, el Metropolita Atenagoras tiene la esperanza de poder reunir
alimentos no perecederos, pequeños quemadores de gas para cocinar, generadores
de electricidad, cobertores, bolsas para dormir (sleeping bags) y tiendas de campaña
para llevar a Haití y distribuirlas entre nuestro feligreses y entre todos
aquellos que necesiten nuestra ayuda. En este momento, Su Eminencia, invita a
todos los fieles a hacer una donación, la que sea, que haga posible reunir un
fondo para Haití.

Finalmente, todas las Parroquias de nuestra Santa Metrópolis van a ofrecer un
servicio memorial (Trisagion) el próximo domingo 24 de febrero por aquellos que
murieron en el terremoto y se hará una colecta especial en este día para apoyar
al pueblo de Haití.

Αγαπητοί και ευλαβέστατοι συνεργάτες στον Αμπελώνα του Χριστού,
Όλοι ζούμε τις μέρες αυτές το δράμα του χειμαζόμενου λαού της Αϊτής. Ένα νησί, το πτωχότερο στην Αμερικανική Ήπειρο, χτυπήθηκε από σεισμό που άφησε εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες νεκρούς και εκατομμύρια τραυματισμένους και αστέγους.
Χωρίς υποδομή, χωρίς τα πλέον στοιχειώδη και απαραίτητα, υποχρεούνται να πίνουν μολυσμένο νερό και να μένουν μέρες χωρίς ούτε ένα κομμάτι ψωμί, να κοιμούνται στους δρόμους της πόλης δίπλα στα ερειπωμένα κτήρια, δίπλα σε πτώματα νεκρών, εγκλωβισμένα κάτω από τα τσιμέντα. Πείνα, αρρώστια και απόγνωση για εκατομμύρια άτομα, για έναν ολόκληρο λαό.
Ως Ποιμενάρχης της ευρύτερης περιοχής συχνά επισκέπτομαι τα νησιά της Καραϊβικής και επομένως και την Αϊτή, όπου η Ιερά Μητρόπολή μας έχει αναπτύξει μεγάλο Ιεραποστολικό έργο, κοινωνικό και πνευματικό. Εδώ και δώδεκα χρόνια με την βοήθεια και του Ιεραποστολικού σας Συνδέσμου εργάζονται εκεί οι ελληνομαθείς ιερείς μας πατήρ Βαρνάβας Jerome Euginst και πατήρ Παύλος Baby Petite Homme, που έχουν αναπτύξει αξιόλογο ιεραποστολικό έργο στους 1.000 περίπου Ορθοδόξους Αϊτινούς. Παράλληλα διατηρούμε δύο σχολεία με 1.200 μαθητές.
Από την πρώτη στιγμή που πληροφορήθηκα τα του σεισμού, προσπαθούσα να επικοινωνήσω με το εκεί Ιεραποστολικό Κλιμάκιο, για να μάθω αν ζουν οι ιερείς μας, οι πιστοί μας, οι μικροί μαθητές. Χθες μόλις κατάφερα να επικοινωνήσω και να μάθω ότι δόξα τω Θεώ οι ιερείς και οι οικογένειές τους ζουν. Για τους πιστούς και τα παιδιά των σχολείων μας δεν έχουμε νεότερα. Δεν υπάρχουν ούτε τα στοιχειώδη μέσα επικοινωνίας για να μάθουμε νέα τους.
Ελπίζω το συντομότερο δυνατόν να καταφέρω να μεταβώ στην Αϊτή και να δω από κοντά την όλη κατάσταση. Πρέπει να οργανώσουμε τους ιερείς μας ώστε μαζί με άλλους συνεργάτες της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως να προσφέρουμε βοήθεια στους πιστούς και τα παιδιά των σχολείων μας, καθώς και σε όλους τους Αϊτινούς της συνοικίας που βρίσκεται το Ιεραποστολικό μας Κέντρο. Χρειάζονται φάρμακα, τρόφιμα, νερό, γεννήτριες, γκαζάκια για να μαγειρεύουν, κουβέρτες και αντίσκηνα, είδη απαραίτητα για τους επόμενους μήνες που θα περάσουν μέχρι να απομακρύνουν τα μπάζα των κατεστραμμένων κτηρίων και να αρχίσουν πάλι τον αγώνα τους για την ανέγερση των σπιτιών τους.
Ένα χάος επικρατεί στο νησί. ενδεικτικά σας αναφέρω ένα συγκλονιστικό γεγονός που πληροφορήθηκα σήμερα. Μετά από 48 ώρες, ανέσυραν ένα μικρό κοριτσάκι από ερειπωμένο κτήριο. Το πόδι του είχε πλακωθεί από μπάζα και έκαναν δύο μέρες για να την απελευθερώσουν. Χωρίς μηχανές, με τα χέρια τους προσπαθούσαν να το ανασύρουν. Με ένα χαμόγελο περίμενε τη λευτεριά. Δυστυχώς παρά την ανάσυρση, το πόδι του είχε μολυνθεί και μετά από μερικές ώρες το μικρό κοριτσάκι πέθανε από τη μόλυνση.
Σκοπός μας είναι να μεταφέρουμε όσα φάρμακα, τρόφιμα, κουβέρτες και άλλα είδη πρώτης ανάγκης μπορούμε στο νησί το συντομότερο δυνατόν. Όπως αντιλαμβάνεστε, είναι δύσκολη ίσως και δαπανηρή η μεταφορά αυτών των ειδών από την Ελλάδα. Ευκολότερο και καλύτερο είναι να αγοραστούν στην Αμερική και να μεταφερθούν από εκεί άμεσα αεροπορικώς στο Πορτ-ο-Πρενς, την πρωτεύουσα του κράτους.
Αδελφοί μου, με τις ευλογίες της Α.Θ.Π. του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίου, ξεκινούμε μια πορεία αγάπης και σας παρακαλούμε να στηρίξετε την προσπάθεια της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεώς μας. Η βοήθειά σας τις δύσκολες τούτες ώρες θα αποτελέσει βάλσαμο παρηγοριάς για τους αδελφούς μας στην Αϊτή και θα αναπτερώσει τις ελπίδες τους, ώστε να αναστηθούν και πάλι μέσα από τα ερείπια.
Ως Επίσκοπος και πνευματικός πατέρας απευθύνω την
έκκληση αυτή και είμαι βέβαιος ότι θα ακούσετε τη φωνή του Κυρίου και δεν θα
μείνετε αμέτοχοι του δράματος αυτού. Ό,τι μπορείτε και όσο μπορείτε.
Θα σας κρατήσουμε ενήμερους για το έργο και τις προσπάθειές μας. Ο αγώνας είναι μακρύς. Οι οικίες των ιερέων και ένα από τα σχολεία μας έχουν καταστραφεί ολοσχερώς. Αλλά ζη Κύριος ο Θεός. Δόξα τω Θεώ έχουμε πιστούς και φίλους σαν εσάς που δεν μας λησμονούν.

Haïti - Communiqué du patriarche Bartholomée
C’est avec une grande peine que le patriarcat œcuménique a appris
l’épouvantable catastrophe qui a frappé Haïti, un des plus pauvres
États de la planète, dans lequel vivent plus de mille Haïtiens
orthodoxes qui disposent de prêtres et de paroisses relevant de
l’archevêché du Mexique. Outre les centaines de morts, ce terrible
séisme laisse derrière lui des milliers de sans-abri, de blessés,
d’orphelins, de frères complètement démunis qui ont tout perdu et sont
plongés dans le désespoir. Les images sont effroyables et les besoins
du peuple et du pays littéralement incalculables !
En cette heure
cruelle et particulièrement tragique pour le peuple haïtien, des
prières ardentes ont été dites au Phanar et dans tous les archevêchés
et communautés ecclésiastiques du trône œcuménique de par le monde. Sa
Sainteté le patriarche œcuménique Bartholomée et le saint et sacré
synode qui l’entoure expriment leur profonde sympathie au peuple
haïtien, tout en adressant parallèlement un appel pressant pour qu’une
assistance effective d’extrême urgence lui soit apportée avec amour et
dans un esprit de solidarité humaine.
S.E. le métropolite du
Mexique, Athénagoras, a déjà été investi de la responsabilité de
coordonner les actions déployées en vue de rassembler et d’envoyer une
aide économique et humanitaire à Haïti.
